BRISBANE GEOGRAPHY

Located on the east coast of Australia, the city of Brisbane has a population of two million. This city was named in honor of Sir Thomas Brisbane who was the Governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825. The first European settlers in this area were a part of a penal colony in 1824. That particular settlement was abandoned, however, more settlers eventually came to the area and Brisbane grew to eventually became the capital of Queensland in 1859. As the capital of the Australian state of Queensland, Brisbane today has become the third largest city in Australia. Some beautiful photos of Brisbane can be found on this Brisbane photography site. Well known for its cultural venues, fine restaurants and sporting events, Brisbane also has much to offer in terms of geographical beauty.

Brisbane Mountains

The greater part of Brisbane is on coastal plain areas that are to the east of the Great Dividing Range, the famous mountain range that runs from northern to southern Australia. The city of Brisbane itself does not have large mountains in the city. However, there is a small mountain and some large hills in the suburban areas just outside the city. Mount Coot-tha, located seven kilometers west of downtown Brisbane, is a mountain that is 287 meters above sea level. Mount Gravatt, although called "mount," is actually considered to be a large hill. This hill is located in a suburb called Mount Gravatt which is one of Brisbane's largest suburbs. Stephens Mountain, despite being called a "mountain," is another very large hill which is located in the Brisbane suburb known as Greenslopes.

Brisbane Coastline

Brisbane happens to be located near coastal tourist destinations that are located on the east coast of Australia. For instance, the Australian Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast are located not far from Brisbane. The Gold Coast, located about an hour from Brisbane, has spectacular beaches where tourists can swim and surf. The nearby Sunshine Coast also has beautiful beaches that are very popular with tourists as well. In addition, the famous Great Barrier Reef is located just a short distance from Brisbane. This reef, a World Heritage area which spans a distance of over 2300 kilometers, is so large that it is actually visible from the moon. So, if you are looking for an opportunity to see one of the natural wonders of the world, a visit to Brisbane will put you within driving distance of the Great Barrier Reef.

Brisbane Tropics

Brisbane's climate can be best described as a subtropical climate. Brisbane has summers that are very hot and humid and has very mild dry winters. Also, rainstorms, hail and strong winds occur often through the spring and fall. In fact, Brisbane tends to have major floods and occasionally cyclones.

Brisbane Tourism

We would like to extend a big thankyou to Brisbane Accommodation who provided us with our outstanding Brisbane Hotels during our school research excursion.

Brisbane Desert

There are three Australian deserts that are partially in the state of Queensland. The Simpson Desert, the Strzelecki, and the Sturt Stony Desert are all located in the Australian state of Queensland. Of course, Brisbane is located in the state of Queensland. Thus, it can be said that the city of Brisbane is located in the same state as three of Australia's deserts. Granted, the city of Brisbane is not necessarily close to the deserts. For example, the deserts are located in the more remote parts of Queensland.
